Question 1 of 2
What are audio recorders?
A pocket or keyring-sized recorder with internal memory and a rechargeable battery. Several models are voice-activated, so they only record when there is something to record — which saves both battery and storage.
Where people use them
- Meetings and lectures you want an accurate record of
- Interviews, where note-taking would slow the conversation
- Situations where you need a record of what was said
What to consider before buying
Battery backup
The clearest difference between models — from a few hours to several days. It is usually in the product name.
Storage
Built-in memory, commonly 8GB and up. More memory means more hours before you have to clear it.
Voice activation
Starts on sound and stops on silence. Useful for long unattended periods.
Size
Some are the size of a car key, some have a display and controls. A display is easier to operate; a smaller unit is easier to carry.
Frequently asked
Battery backup is stated per model — several are named for it, such as "Upto 3 day Backup". Storage is separate: an 8GB recorder holds many hours of audio.
The recorder starts when it detects sound and pauses in silence, so you are not left with hours of empty recording to skip through.
The models with USB connect for transfer and charging. Check the individual product page.
