WiFi or 4G: which camera works where you need it

The single question that decides whether a camera will work at all in the place you are putting it — and it has nothing to do with picture quality.

By Indo Spy · Updated

Before resolution, before night vision, before anything else: how is the camera going to reach you? Get this wrong and you own a camera that records perfectly to a card you cannot reach.

What WiFi actually gives you

A WiFi camera joins your existing network and streams to an app on your phone. You can watch live, you usually get motion alerts, and you can check in from anywhere. It is the right answer whenever there is already a reliable network where the camera will sit.

The catch is range. WiFi that works fine in your living room often does not reach a gate, a basement, or the far end of a shop. Check signal at the exact spot before buying, not from the sofa.

When 4G is the only thing that works

A 4G camera takes a SIM and connects over the mobile network, so it needs no WiFi at all. That makes it the practical choice for sites, gates, vehicles, farms and anywhere with power but no router. The trade is that you are paying for a data plan and the camera is only as good as the mobile coverage at that spot.

And when you need neither

Plenty of the catalogue records to a memory card and nothing else. No network, no app, no subscription — you collect the card and watch the footage. For a recorder you place for a few hours, this is simpler and there is nothing to fail.

How to narrow it down here

Use the connectivity filter in the shop, or answer the question in the product finder and it will only show you cameras that reach you the way you picked.

Frequently asked

Can I use a 4G camera without a SIM?

No. The SIM is how it connects — without one it can only record locally, if the model supports a card.

Will a WiFi camera keep recording if my internet drops?

Models with a memory card generally keep recording locally; you lose the live view, not the footage. Check the specific product page.
